Will There be a Superbook Throughout the U.S.?

So, it turns out the Westgate and its venerable SuperBook brand are being licensed for nationwide release, ala William Hill. Jay Kornegay, Westgate Vice President of Sports Operations, made the announcement in August 2018. He further stated, “There will be a huge market swarming to these new, legal sports books, spreading across the country. I feel the expansion of sports gaming will follow the same path as the cellphone business. It’s infant stages in this country now, but we’ll see sports gaming options almost on every corner someday. It’ll be like the U.K., where they’re as common as barbershops.”

THE DIRECTION OF SPORTS GAMBLING

“The future is plastics!”

Mr. Kornegay certainly knows what he is talking about, but none of this happens in a vacuum. This expansion strategy has been in place for a long time and is not specific solely to the SuperBook brand going nationwide. All the big players will want a piece of the action. Let’s remember, it was the recent Supreme Court decision on PASPA that let the genie out of the bottle.

Why is this important to the general sports better? It is very simple. Gambling on sports is easy and the sportsbook operators know this and want it that way. The hard part is making money handicapping and wagering on sports. The sportsbooks know this, too.

I was telling some friends, before the Supremes announced their decision on PASPA, this is a case of ‘be careful what you ask for.’ I think we will probably experience a slow erosion of handicapping, with a quick reliance on guessing the outcomes of sporting events, by the gambling masses.

Why should we care? Let’s consider the erosion of playable blackjack games as an example. The more the public craves betting on something, the more the opportunities will be provided. However, since the masses only want to bet on something – anything – they will do so without considering if it is a good bet or bad bet. We have seen the erosion of blackjack, and we stand on the precipice of the erosion of betable sports lines.

To stem that tide, we must be ever-vigilant to find the best lines and value and only betting when we have an advantage. Demand better lines and do not accept bad lines. In other words, vote with your pocketbook. Otherwise, the greedy corporations will erode the games and lines to extinguish any advantage we ever had.
