Week 6 Best Bets

This Week's Top Picks

Alright new week of action, new opportunity to make some cool hard cash…Let’s take a look and make some bets! But before we do that, know that injuries to key players are starting to pile up. Check injuries and playing status before you make any bets.

309 Beloved UNLV Runnin Rebels +7.0. Friday Night Lights! This is year three of the Marcus Arroyo experience. As our pal Phil Steele tells us, it is typically the third year of a new regime where the team starts to excel. Also looking at the Rebels ATS results thus far, they are a covering machine, four of the five spreads have been covered! And get this – head coach Arroyo played quarterback at San Jose State. Do not think Arroyo does not want to win this game! To borrow a Vegas term, this squad is playing with house money. Don Best doesn’t show injuries to players on either squad. SP+ says Spartans should be about a 4-point favorite.

Here is an interesting Friday night matchup that I will NOT be betting, pregame. Nevada hosting Colorado State. The current Colorado State head coach is the former Nevada head coach. After the regular season and prior to the bowl game last season, Norvell fled Reno for the beautiful environs of Fort Collins, taking much of the team and coaching staff with him. You can bet Norvell is hated in Reno. Might look for an ingame betting angle. Note, however, both squads are awful.

I usually stink at picking first round games, so I’m not advising any Best Bets for the first rounders, except one. There are indeed some intriguing matchups…TCU @ Kansas, Louisville @ Virginia, Buffalo @ Bowling Green. Here is the one I’m betting…

384 Hated Oklahoma Sooners +7.0 @ The Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The Red River Rivalry! These two schools and fan bases HATE each other! Why bet the hated Sooners? I have been saying it for years, “Always take the points in the Red River Rivalry!” Sooners are reeling from losing, in ignominious fashion, their last two games and this line of -7/+7 shows the pendulum has swung too far in the Horns favor. I think the Game of the Year Line on this contest was something like Sooners -2.0. So, this line has moved 9ish points. That’s just too many points to give a squad in a Must Win Rivalry situation. SP+ thinks this game is a Pick Em. Horns Down!

For the fun of it, let’s get a Total in here…

317 North Carolina Tar Heels / 318 The U Hurricanes – Over 65.5 – Both teams can score. When last we saw The U, they were getting their asses kicked by Middle Tennessee 31-45. The U enjoyed a bye week last week. I’m certain this squad did not enjoy getting yelled at by head coach Cristobal for two solid weeks, so they should be ready to play Saturday. As for the Tar Heels, in four games against FBS squads, they are averaging 42.75 points per game. The U just needs to figure out how to score 24 points and we cash this ticket!

365 Washington State Cougars +13.0 – Honestly, I am waiting for the Trojans to trip over their giant swinging dicks. I think this is the contest where that happens. Both squads are playing good ball. Cougars lost a heartbreaker to Oregon (but still covered the spread!) and Trojans had their hands full at Oregon State (and didn’t cover the spread!). Something’s gotta give! SP+ thinks Trojans are about 10 points better than the Cougs.

397 Ball State Cardinals +7.5 – I don’t know what the Chippewas problem is, but they have been getting it handed to them. Ball U won in overtime last week hosting a strong Northern Illinois squad. SP+ thinks this is about a six-point game, so at +7.5 we are on the right side of 7.

403 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers +7.0 – Holy Smokes these are the two best teams in Conference USA (in my honest opinion). What could possibly go wrong? This game should be a back-and-forth slugfest and I think whichever squad scores last wins this thing. SP+ thinks Roadrunners win by 4.

411 BYU +4.0 being played in Las Vegas. Holy Shit Otter it’s the Mormons versus the Catholics at a more or less neutral site! Nothing really to be said about this one. Mormons are the better squad in my opinion and are getting points! SP+ predicts Catholics are about 3-points better. Should be a fun one!

Alright, I’m heading off to Costa Rica early Friday morning. Don’t know if I will have the time or inclination to prognosticate while down there. But will check in if I have some good bets or other ideas.

If I do not come back, do not come looking for me…

Peace Out
